Open University courses for students in upper secondary education

In autumn 2023, Uniarts Helsinki’s Open University will start offering courses that are suitable for students in general upper secondary education, too, and where attendance is free of charge.

Starting from autumn 2023, Uniarts Helsinki’s Open University will offer courses that are suitable for students in upper secondary education. These courses are a great opportunity to get to know the fields of art that are taught at Uniarts Helsinki and get the first glimpse into what university-level studies are like.

Each academic year, we compile a separate list of Open University courses that are suited for students in upper secondary education and inform upper secondary schools of our selection through arts teachers and guidance counsellors.

The course calendar of Uniarts Helsinki’s Open University has the filter “Suitable for students in upper secondary education”, which gives you a list of all the courses that are suited for you.

General information on studies

Students in upper secondary education do not have to pay course fees for the courses that are classified “Suitable for students in upper secondary education” in the course calendar. There is no age limit to attending courses at the Open University, but some prior knowledge may be required on courses where art-making is an essential part of the course.

Most of the courses are organised in Helsinki and online, but some of them are also organised in Seinäjoki.

You can include the courses you have completed in your general upper secondary school studies if you have agreed on the matter with the guidance counsellor or subject teacher of your school. You can also transfer the completed credits directly for your future degree if you later apply and are admitted to Uniarts Helsinki’s degree programme as a degree student.

Applying

Students in upper secondary education can apply to attend courses suitable for them during the application periods of Uniarts Helsinki’s Open University three times per year. Students must mention the name of their general upper secondary school in the application form, but otherwise, the application procedure is the same as with other applicants to Uniarts Helsinki’s Open University.

Each course description mentions the criteria that are applied when selecting students to Open University studies. Students are admitted to courses either in the order of registration or based on their application. The selection process may include a letter of motivation or an advance assignment, for example, to ensure the applicant’s readiness to participate in the instruction.
